How to Use the Gas Cost Calculator

Planning a road trip or just want to know how much your daily commute costs in fuel? Our gas cost calculator helps you estimate trip fuel expenses based on current gas prices. Simply select your starting city and destination, enter your vehicle's fuel economy in MPG, and choose the fuel grade you use. The calculator will estimate gallons needed and total fuel cost using today's average prices.

How Fuel Cost Is Calculated

The calculator uses a simple formula: Gallons Needed = Distance ÷ MPG, then Total Cost = Gallons Needed × Price Per Gallon. Distances between cities are calculated using approximate geographic coordinates — actual driving distance may vary. For the most accurate results, check the "Enter distance manually" option and input your known trip mileage.

Why Fuel Economy Matters

Your vehicle's MPG (miles per gallon) is the single biggest factor in trip fuel cost. A vehicle getting 15 MPG will use nearly twice as much fuel as one getting 30 MPG for the same trip. To find your car's EPA-rated MPG, check the window sticker, your owner's manual, or look up your vehicle on fueleconomy.gov.

Tips to Reduce Fuel Costs

  • Maintain proper tire pressure — underinflated tires reduce fuel economy
  • Drive smoothly — avoid rapid acceleration and hard braking
  • Reduce highway speed — driving 65 mph instead of 75 mph can improve MPG significantly
  • Remove excess weight — every 100 lbs reduces MPG by about 1%
  • Use cruise control on highways for consistent fuel efficiency
